A 2-hour panel discussion on the legal framework that governs translation and interpretation in the country and in Florida. We aim to prompt a review and enhancement of our knowledge of the laws, rules, and regulations that define our scope of action as professional translators and interpreters. We also seek to promote reflection on the importance of standards and practices that can help improve our levels of competency and delivery of quality work, which in turn helps foster the confidence and acknowledgment that can bring success to our professional enterprises.

It was fun see everyone on Third Thursday, July 16. We had 8 participants including Paul, who is not a TI professional but he came to enjoy our company and the good food at La Fontana. And Florencio made the time to come join us in Coral Springs, on July 16. Everyone wanted a picture with him, and we had a good time. His presence was enough to get everyone in conference mood, so we shared our ideas and plans to attend it. We can say he is doing a good job promoting the ATA Conference in Miami in November.

As usual we shared our experiences, our dreams and laughed at the usually shared horror stories. We exchanged cards, gave and took advice on how to become better professionals. Sometimes we also discuss movies and recipes, like normal people.

We look forward to seeing you tonight and you are all invited!

1. Come to FIRST TUESDAY on November 3. It will be held at the hotel to allow our visiting colleagues to meet the local T&I community. More info to come!
2. Volunteer at the HOSPITALITY DESK. We are the main reference for visiting attendees. Hospitality Desk Volunteers help our guests get to the right place – be it the next session or the best restaurant for a quick lunch, or…

The Hospitality Desk is to be manned from Wednesday through Saturday. Shifts are 90 minutes to 2 hours long and volunteers will have a slew of information at their disposal.

3. If you are an ATA Conference Veteran, plan to be a Buddy and help a Newbie feel at home. Newbies and Buddies will be paired off at the event held on Wednesday, Nov 4, from 4:45 to 5:30 pm.

If this is your first ATA conference, you are a newbie and will benefit from the experience your buddy will share.  If you have attended ATA conferences in the past, you will enjoy connecting with your new colleagues, and we encourage you to be a buddy to a new T&I colleague. Most buddies are assigned 1 to 2 newbies.

After such a productive discussion, we wanted to put some of our ideas into practice.  To celebrate this one-year anniversary, the chair of the Broward Social Committee, Edith Oliva, will write an article about Third Thursdays to be published in our next issue of Speaking Out!, coming out in May.

Also, we will hold our first Thematic Third Thursday next month, on May 16.   We want to hold a discussion focused on one topic that is interesting for attendees. Possible topics are: English idioms, work-related anecdotes, ideas to improve productivity, running your own business.  Feel free to suggest ideas for our next gathering through Facebook or via email. We will let you know the ideas we received in our next announcement.  Stay tuned.
