Carlos H. Gamez is a Circuit Court Judge serving in the Florida 11th Judicial Circuit Court.
This session offers a practical, inside look at Florida’s criminal justice system from the bench. Drawing from his experience as a Circuit Court Judge in Miami-Dade County, Judge Carlos Gamez will introduce participants to the Florida criminal court system, explaining how a criminal case moves from arrest and first appearance through charging, arraignment, pretrial proceedings, plea negotiations, trial, sentencing, and corrections. Participants will examine, the purposes of the principal criminal hearings, and the roles and responsibilities of judges, prosecutors, defense attorneys, law enforcement officers, corrections personnel, defendants, witnesses, and court interpreters.
