The presentation will provide a vision of the “running course” through today’s healthcare language access landscape and will help participants to identify their lane and firm up their starting position. Inspired by the athlete’s mantra “Start where you are, Use what you have, and Do what you can”, participants will explore proven strategies for shoring up language access infrastructure and improving quality through the coordination of key interests at the personal, organizational, and community levels.

“Expectations of Language Providers in Healthcare”

The presentation will focus on how working for and in a healthcare system can be a daunting job for interpreters and translators, especially in the context of the recent pandemic. There is an exponential emphasis on localization due to numerous blunders by hospitals and other authorities producing health-related literature. What do healthcare systems, both large and small, expect when contracting or hiring language providers? The workshop aims to make professionals aware of needs when discussing knowledge acquisition, skill integration, and role affirmation.

“Drugs, medications and pharmacology: implications for language interpreters and translators”

A one-hour workshop which aims to provide a fundamental understanding of drugs and medication-related concepts for more accurate and professional interpretations and translations. Participants will review information regarding the names of medications, classification, side effects, routes of administration, dosage, and mechanisms of action by which drugs work in our body. We will also review pharmaceutical presentations, the implications of understanding certain pharmacological parameters, and medication terminology in general.
