This month, our regularly scheduled First Tuesday gathering falls on New Year’s Day, so this time only our monthly get-together will take place on the first work Tuesday of the year, January 8, at the usual place and time: Books and Books, 265 Aragon Avenue, Coral Gables, from 5:00 p.m. on.

Please RSVP to Linda Dunlap so the restaurant can reserve enough space for us

Parking: Coral Gables Public Garage is across the street from Books and Books and you get a discount with their stamp on the garage ticket. There is also plenty of parking on the street.

More January Fun For All Of Us: 
January 12 – The Certification Commission for Healthcare Interpreters (CCHI) will present a webinar for ATIF members interested in learning about that certification. This is a FREE online event and we will provide details as they become available.
 
January 17 – The regularly scheduled Third Thursday social evening for Broward County T&I professionals will be held at its usual location, Bona Café, 2468 Wilton Drive, Wilton Manors, beginning at 6:30 p.m.   Please rsvp to Emily Paul.
 
January 18, in Jacksonville, Davor Zidovec, Ph.D, will present an ATIF Professional Development Workshop on DNA Forensics.
  • Time: 1:00 pm.
  • Location: Duval County Courthouse, 501 W. Adams Street, Jacksonville 32202
  • Presenter: Davor is an ATIF member and a Federal, Georgia, and Florida Certified Court Interpreter.
  • Content: this 4-hour workshop will address, among other things, identification, analysis techniques, possible results, types of samples, paternity tests, terminology, and more.  A multilingual glossary will be distributed;there is no cost to attend.  This presentation will be given in South Florida later on in 2013.   
Continuing Education Credits: Florida Courts = 4.5 CIEs.  ATA = 4 CEUs. NAJIT = in process.

January 18-20 – The International Medical Interpreters Association (IMIA) 2013 Annual Conference will be held at the Miami Beach Convention Center. It is a joint effort by IMIA, ATIF and the Florida Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf (FRID). The IMIA Conference offers 55 workshops for novice and experienced medical interpreters, covering a range of subjects from vocabulary to techniques and advocacy.

January 25-27 – ATA’s Translation Company Division (TCD) will hold its annual conference in Orlando. This year’s conference: “A Recipe for Business Growth-10 Ingredients” is a must for those considering becoming language service providers, as well as for those who already are and wish to learn about market trends, service quality markers, standards and other aspects of the business. The program is available online.
